Intel, the American multinational company that leads the market processors, will buy Altera, another American company, which develops chips but does not manufacture them. The deal is around 16.7 billion dollars (15.2 billion euros) and will allow Intel to develop more technology to equip large data centers.

Negotiations between the two companies had already motivated news over the last two months. The acquisition was agreed between the administrations of both companies and was eventually announced on Monday.

The Intel pay in cash (often, such acquisitions are made, in whole or in part, with the delivery of shares) and will finance the transaction through existing funds and new debt. The amount corresponds to $ 54 per share, a value about 56% higher than the price of Altera in late March, when appeared in the US press the first news about a possible deal.

The Change is not a direct competitor of Intel, since it is dedicated to the design of chips, whose manufacture is then delivered to other companies. The two companies already worked together.

The Intel dominates the market for personal computers, a segment that has been falling, despite some recent resuscitation. However, it has faced stronger competition in the mobile sector, where Qualcomm, also American, has a leading position.

According to Gartner analyst information, Intel is first in the global semiconductor market (the fundamental component of processors) for billing. Last year we had a 15% share of a market that exceeded 315 billion dollars. Second was the South Korean Samsung, with 10%, and third, with a share of 6%, came to Qualcomm, whose Snapdragon processors are used in many models of tablets and mobile phones, among which several Samsung handsets.

In the first quarter of this year, Intel had revenues of 12.8 billion dollars (the same as last year) and two billion profit (an increase of 3%).

With this acquisition, Intel aims to improve the product offering to segments such as large data centers, which are now a central part of running many technological enterprise of all sizes, from to which Google, Facebook and Amazon.

The company also expects Altera technology help create processors products geared to the age of the Internet of Things, in which all kinds of devices are connected Network and has been a market to attract the investment of many companies.

“Whether to allow new growth in network segments, from large data centers and the Internet of Things, our customers expect better performance at lower costs. This is the promise of Moore’s Law and is enhanced innovation by joining forces from Intel and Altera, “said the chief executive of Intel, Brian Krzanich said in a statement.

Moore’s Law is a prediction made by Intel founder Gordon E. Moore, according to which the computing power of the processors would double every two years. It has become, since it was enunciated, about 45 years, a kind of target for the sector.

Intel expects to close the purchase in the next six to nine months.
