President of the Foundation for Science and Technology up resigns – Express

The president of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Miguel Seabra, resigned on Tuesday, at a time when they are huffing and puffing critical to the evaluation and funding of centers research, a process that is giving controversy for several months.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science (MEC), Miguel Seabra resigned for “personal reasons”, keeping themselves in roles all the other members of the FCT.

In a statement, the Ministry of Education emphasizes the contribution of the President of the FCT in the last three years for the modernization and competitiveness of science in Portugal, considering the body responsible for the allocation of research grants managed to secure “the financial sustainability of the science and technology system and strengthened presence into the European Research Area”.

The truth is that the new rules funding for research centers, announced in January, to significant budget cuts in various scientific units and was very contested. Just last week, eight research centers of the Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon, for example, joined in the criticism of the FCT.

Since it was launched the process of assessing the research units in 2013, the rules have changed several times, notably by setting an upper limit for the award of the highest ratings.

The allocation of individual grants research also suffered changes. In the contest which opened Tuesday, FCT will fail to assign more than one doctoral fellowship or post-doctoral researcher at the same.
