Semibreve, the festival that combines music and technology – SUN Newspapers

A show of Polish artist Anna Zaradny pointed out last night, the start of this year’s Semibreve, the festival of electronic music and digital art taking place in Braga, until Sunday.

Over the next three days will go through stages of Circus Theater and GNRation some of the biggest names of this genre today, including Roll The Dice, Plaid, Ryoichi Kurokawa, sensate Focus, Thomas Ankersmit and Demdike Stare.

Besides music, programming Semibreve still displays a number of installations and exhibitions, partly resulting from projects masters of Catholic universities and Minho, and that the patents are former barracks of the GNR, now converted into a cultural center with the name of GNRation.

The space, there goes two years trying to position itself as a cultural and creative epicenter of Braga, was the venue of the show opening, the position of the Polish Anna Zaradny, who introduces himself as “visual and sound artist, composer, improviser “and whose performances combine music, video, photography, dance and objects

For 50 minutes Zaradny -. visiting Portugal for the first time – filled the room” Black Box “, the GNRation with your sounds generated from the laptop. The music that somebody in the audience said it reminded him “a scene from a science fiction horror movie”, managed to grab the place a public split between the parties (almost all repeat these wanderings of Semibreve) and that there were only in passing from one to another showroom, who stand in the back of the space.

Among those who occupied seats – which sold out – those who have chosen to sit on the floor and those who preferred manter- his feet, and measured two-thirds of the room were filled. Maybe about 180 people on a weekday in the rainy weather did not invite large outputs (only yesterday, the storm had flooded the tunnels of the city, submerging cars and throwing traffic chaos in Braga).

The receptivity of the audience liked the artist who, at the end of the performance, in conversation with the SOL stressed that “there is a market for this kind of music”, but admitted that it is “a very special audience that appreciates this aesthetic and have a longer experience in this type of art. “

The Semibreve will have the fourth edition and, besides music, still intends to publicize some of the scientific production in the field of digital arts produced by the University of Minho . Example is the installation “Meet the Frumbles”, where three robotic dolls felt talk among themselves and interact with the audience. Are accompanied by a musical performance – last night was a bass -. Going and stopping the show with a massive repertoire of humorous comments, good northern way

” We have chosen to use more spicy expressions, because we want the puppets react the same way we do when we talk in coffee, “explains Luis Fraga, a systems engineer who has worked at Microsoft and created the Frumbles together with graphic designer António Coelho. Everything is made using technology that we find, for example, in games consoles in our homes.

It is equipped with a “kinect camera, which are the eyes of the system” and allow the isolation between the audience watching the show, a person with whom the dolls talk and interact. And then there is the brain “which is a computer that controls the animatronics of creatures.” The idea, says António Coelho, is to make a sort of back to basics: “the screen no longer surprises anyone else, then we need something more tangible with which people create relationships. For example, people like the Angry Birds game but need to have the physical dummy. “

The Festival continues tonight, already with the program of concerts. In the Main Hall of the Theatro Circo act Gwyer Karen and Maria Monica, at 21.30, and Roll the Dice at midnight, while the small auditorium gets indulged inC around 22h45. The ticket prices vary between 25 and 9 euros and can be purchased at the box office Circus Theater.
