The week of Science and Technology opened its doors to more than 700 … – Setúbal on the Network

Cooking food in the solar oven, to produce parts in a 3D printer, driving a car in the simulator car, or commanding a robot to play the "noughts and crosses", were some of the experiences that over 700 students from secondary and vocational education held at the Week of Science and Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS).

The IPS received in their laboratories, from 22 to 25 November, the students of the region and the south of the country thathave experienced the application of science and technology in the day-to-day, with the realization of experiences and exchange of ideas with students and teachers of IPS. The participants lived the experience of being engineers and scientists for a day, knowing better what do professionals from these areas, that you can find on the labour market, as well as what you can learn and develop at the Institute.

Take Science and Technology to more young people, in different formats, "is a bet very strong IPS to increase the scientific culture and to attract students to these areas", being that the Week of Science and Technology "has received over the past editions about 10,000 students" said President of the IPS, Prof. Dr. Pedro Dominguinhos. For 2017, in addition to the creativity of the experiences and interaction with teachers and students of IPS, "the challenge is to bring companies to the Week of Science and Technology through some of the activities" to promote direct contact of the students with professionals and the reality of work in different scientific and technological areas.

The initiative is recognized also by the professors of secondary education, such as the Prof. João Santos, Sebastião da Gama Secondary School, that three years ago participates "because it is an excellent opportunity to get to know the students that it is an institution of higher education, and we believe that they have excellent labs, good teachers, and if students want to pursue their studies here have an open door".

The new Courses-Technical Higher Professional (CTeSP) of the IPS, a bet for the Polytechnic to attract more young people to the areas of engineering and technology, motivated also the presence of more vocational schools and training centres in the initiative. As pointed out in the Prof. Dora Silva, a teacher of the Professional School of Montijo, "here students can get an idea of what is possible to do the following, much in the practical part, and here you can continue to have the theory and the practice in their studies".

Among the various areas in focus, the mechanical was the one that most caught the attention of Tiago Teixeira, a student at the Professional School of Montijo, which is said to have worshipped "the activity in the workshops because it’s something you already practice, and that I love to do and it was good to see the machines working", adding that "to study here is a good opportunity after completion of my course".

the activities in The area of robotics and computer science have also hit with the students as Agnes of Jesus, of the high School André de Gouveia of Évora, which reveals that "all that is connected with computers and robotics have to do with me [...] and what I loved was the activity of programming the robots", referring that "this experience was unforgettable, I take good memories and the School is good, the courses have output", and considers the IPS a chance to continue their studies.

During the event was also notable for the interaction of students of IPS with the participants, such as Daniel Matos and Bruno Almeida, which saw poster of your project "Help Them" be chosen, among others, of the class, to be exposed in the Week of Science and Technology. This is an APP oriented and supportive, which tells you on the map people who need support, giving also the possibility of carrying out actions of the collection of goods by the individual or on the part of entities in the area of social support, "that allows users to see how they can help and in which locations," said Daniel Matos. The receptivity of the participants against the project, "has been positive, try to understand how they can help or how to handle the interaction between the person that you want to help, and the needy person", indicates the student of Computer Engineering.

The Week of Science and Technology returns for the year, for their 15.Th edition, with the objective to continue to provide young people with unique experiences, arousing their interest for the challenges that may encounter in the world of science.
