Japan plans supercomputer to resume cutting-edge technology – Globo.com

Japan plans to build the supercomputer fastest in the world, in a bet to equip the manufacturers of the country with a platform for research that can help them develop and improve autonomous cars, robotics, and medical diagnostics.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will invest the equivalent of US$ 173 million in the project. The project is part of a policy of the government to resume the position of Japan in the world of technology.

The country has lost the lead in many areas amid intense competition with South Korea and China, the home of the machine with the best performance in the world today.

In a move that should put Japan at the top of supercomputers, the engineers should construct a machine that can do 130 quadrilhões calculations per second — or 130 petaflops, in scientific language — in the beginning of next year, said sources involved in the project.

at This speed, the computer japanese would be the front of the chinese Sunway Taihulight, which has a capacity of 93 petaflops.

“as far as we know, there is nothing that is so fast,” said the director general of the National Institute of Industrial Sciences and Advanced Technology of Japan, and Satoshi Sekiguchi. The computer will be built in the institute.

The effort to return to the avant-garde happens in a time of growing nostalgia for the heyday of the technological prowess of Japan, which has declined since China surpassed as the second largest economy in the world.
