Emergency response teams and enhanced with new technology … – News up to the Minute (press release)

the aim of The project ‘may Have Indoor Location’ location (inner need) – PIL – “is to replace the usefulness of the GPS, since this technology, in the interior of buildings, features very limited or non-existent”, said to Lusa the investigator Lourenço Castro.

to Achieve an indoor location “with high accuracy” also allows you to develop games and multimedia content immersive or “see our home adapt to our routine”.

The first idea put into practice was the detection of falls, targeted the elderly, which has evolved in the direction of monitor your activities throughout the day, including walking and running.

“it Was then that we started to realize that we could not only detect that a person is walking, but also how much has shifted and in which direction, which has culminated in the start of our project positioning ‘indoor’ (indoor)”, he explained.

Due to its “dynamic potential”, this technology is targeted at several types of audiences, as is the case of the managers of commercial surfaces (so as to give a better shopping experience to their customers), the hospitals (who need to quickly find professionals in emergency situations), and the sector of the hospitality industry (achieving a better energy management of its hotels).

The fundamental point of the research, according to Lourenço Castro, goes through to interpret the signals generated by the sensors present in smartphones, in order to understand how the user was moving.

since the project is being developed with the aim to be “used by any person, in a wide range of devices,” the team has been building a set of data collected by various types of people, in different mobile devices, while traveled the routes previously defined.

“This way, our algorithms can be developed and refined with the purpose of approaching more and more from reality”, he concluded.

The project, which already involved around 15 researchers, is mainly funded internally, but over the years, has received co-financing through programmes NORTH 2020, Portugal 2020 and the ERDF.

Started in 2012, has grown continuously since then, and there an end date set “due to the good results, to the potential of technology and the constant search for accuracies higher”.
