Altice will extend fiber network in the USA with Portuguese technology … – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

The Altice USA, the fourth largest carrier in the U.S., announced this Wednesday, November 30, which will invest in the upgrade of the networks of the Optimum (formerly Cablevision) and Suddenlink. The aim of the French group passes by overwriting the entire network of the two operators by fiber optic high-speed.

The technology, with speed up to 10 gibabits per second, was developed in Portugal, more precisely in Aveiro in Altice Labs, old EN Innovation.

“The technology (hardware) used in the “deployment” of the fiber in the U.S., as well as the network management applications, quality of service and alarms have been developed and produced by Altice Labs in Portugal”, said the Business official source from PT Portugal.

the aim of The Altice is to take this technology developed in Portugal, to 4.6 million homes of customers spread across 20 states in north american during the next five years. The French group has not disclosed the amounts of investment.

According to the us press this is the largest plan in the development of fiber submitted by an operator in the market. And the plan announced Wednesday will push the rivals, including Verizon.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, with a connection of 1 gigabit per second a customer can download a movie in 30 or 40 seconds. With the new technology that the Altice will export (10 gigabits per second) can download in seconds while that with the current network of Verizon (50 megabits per second) can take up to 14 minutes.

At the end of last year, Meo announced that it would extend its current fibre network to over 3 million homes in the Portuguese territory until 2020. The values of the expansion in Portugal also were not disclosed.

(Correction: In the last paragraph which stated “over 3 million homes in portugal to 2017″ should read-2020)
