Technology beacons: the Zoo of Berlin at your fingertips – euronews

visitors to The Berlin zoo can now access all the information about the animals, through an application, which uses the technology of beacons .

When a visitor approaches a particular venue, the application gives you information about the animals, automatically. Tobias Gruter, manager of the social networks of the Berlin zoo, explains: "we installed the so-called beacons in the enclosures of animals selected. Are small transmitters which send a signal to the phone, when the application is connected. After the app suggests information about the animals that are in the vicinity."

With more than 20 thousand animals, the zoo of Berlin is one of Europe’s largest. Every year, it attracts more than three million visitors from all over the world. And, some have already tested the application: "The application is quite useful because the information is at your fingertips. Technology has progressed a lot and people need to have the information at your fingertips, instead of looking for a book or a pamphlet," concludes one of the visitors.

companies are increasingly interested in the technology of beacons:"essentially the technology of beacons recognizes the location of the person and provides information. This is your most basic. This technology already exists for some time. Tourism already employs almost 20 years ago, but now it is much more convenient because it can be directly on the phone. It is possible to find everything about any subject," concludes Nicole Scott, Founder of the Mobilegeeks.com.

This new technology may come to replace the material printed, which is bulky and costly, in several institutions, such as museums and galleries.
