Hackathon Farfetch: Technology (literally) in the centre of Porto – the Magazine BIT, computers for all.

The Avenida dos Aliados, in Porto, is the stage that that is the first hackathon the public Farfetch. In the press conference, held today in the morning, José Neves, the CEO of this global company in the fashion e-commerce luxury, welcomed by the fact that there have been 300 entries. Of these, only 180, that have demonstrated a degree of innovation higher, will fight for the € 12,500 prize.

such As? "Easy." In this real marathon of programming, developers had to form teams between three to five elements, there is no requirements in terms of technological knowledge or skills.

The 10 best ideas will be presented tomorrow. Now, it remains to give the "rope" to the fingers and to the imagination… and program.

The dynamics of the city

Rui Moreira, president of the municipality of porto, says that it is precisely this dynamic that you want to "your" city. "Farfetch was born here, in this environment, and is one of the that has helped us to build this ecosystem. This is the city that we want and that we promise to the future".

in fact, José Neves is said to be with great satisfaction that attends to the dynamism of this ecosystem in the Portuguese technology, now enhanced by the event Web Summit, which will take place in the coming month of November, in Lisbon.

THE CEO admits that being at what is one of the most iconic of the city is exciting, since he was born and did all his academic career at the Faculty of Economics of Porto. "Has a symbolism too large. Was in Porto, I started my professional career".

The executive says that this will be the first of many marathons of programming, although it has not specified when will be the next and if you will have as a backdrop the city of porto.

Celebrate innovation

As to the competition, all 180 participants are distributed for 12 teams, some internal, that is, composed only by elements of their own Farfetch, and the remaining external. "It is an event open to the outside," said José Neves.

For now, the teams are only the national but in the press conference, the executive admitted to extend the scope to an international scale.

"The idea is, during the course of these 24 hours, and programmers to give wings to their imagination, their ability of innovation and technology. We want to celebrate entrepreneurship and innovation".

at the conference was John Vasconcelos, the Secretary of State of the Industry, which focused that Portugal needs of the entrepreneurship and innovation of the Port.

As to the Farfetch, welcomed not only the hackathon, but mainly by demonstrating to a generation of Portuguese that is possible, being Portuguese, from Portugal, to create a global business.

"And I am a witness that already in all around me talk about this project. And speak with respect, with consideration and this is commendable. We need more of these ambassadors that are proud of their Portuguese," said the Secretary of State.

At the end, the Chief Technology Officer, Cipriano Sousa, it started working from day one with the CEO, José Neves, decided, themselves, to get their hands to work and… schedule, as of the rest illustrates the image.

Tomorrow, at 10 o’clock, the ten teams selected will present their projects. B!T will be present and although we do not know which ones are best, one thing is certain: the imagination of the participants as to the names of the teams, is itself revealing. We can not fail to mention the team "copy & pastries" and "Chicharros of the Douro Canarinhos".
