Segment auto parts win new technology – the Journal of Commerce

A market opportunity and technological advancement was the starting point for the Shaping Indústria Metalúrgica Ltda. design the development of an equipment of plasma high-technology to the treatment of surfaces. Project coordinator, professor Carlos Figueroa explains that the coatings of amorphous carbon diamond-like (DLC) have a friction very low and can enable energy efficiency in internal combustion engines, and in electromechanical devices.

As the Program InovarAuto, the federal government, benefits from tax exemptions to the manufacturers that increase the efficiency of cars, and knowing that 30% of energy loss in motors are caused by frictional forces present when the parts are in motion, the company took its expertise to develop a low-cost technology to apply DLC in auto parts and thus raise energy efficiency.

The professor says that there is already technology for DLC coatings, but is available at prices that the market does not accept and which limit the applications on a large scale. The project presented within the program Tecnova RS aims to the construction of a reactor plasma for DLC coatings with a final cost of 10% of the current value.

The Shaping was a patent unprecedented in the world for DLC coatings by means of a technology called confinement, electrostatic, however, it does not have the resources to run it, which is now possible with the partnership of Tecnova. The equipment is in the final stages of assembly and testing of plasma and, according to Figueroa, in two months, there will be the first DLC coatings applied in the actual pieces.
