Portuguese technology comes to American shared bikes – Observer

The first system of shared electric bicycles in the Americas has Portuguese technology and was inaugurated on October 14. Later this fall, bewegen company promises to launch the Bikeemotion technology in the town of Lagoa, Algarve, in partnership with the local town hall.

The Bikeemotion is the result of a Portuguese consortium created in 2011, whose idea center is to provide flexibility to bicycle users shared so that they can leave wherever they want, says the press release. The Portuguese technology allows each bicycle communicate with the central and provide information on their location in real time (via GPS). This system was integrated by bewegen in order to create a more innovative solution for car sharing.

The first city to have these bikes was Birmingham, Alabama (USA), where bewegen and the Zyp Bikeshare (bike sharing company in Birmingham) will put 300 bicycles and 30 stations by the end of October, over 100 bikes and 10 stations during the next spring.

“The launch of Zyp marks an intense cultural change,” he said, quoted in a statement, David Flemming, CEO of implementing company REV. “We opened the new era of the transport system in Birmingham, at which time workers, visitors and residents can explore the city in a more healthy, innovative and fun way.”
