London Underground testing technology that “recycles” energy – EXAME.com

Sao Paulo – With more than 400 kilometers long and about 3 million users per day, the subway London is a hungry system Power .

Looking reduce the demand for electricity and make the process more Sustainable , the Transport for London (TFL ), which manages the London Underground, is testing a new technology that promises to cut 5% of the energy bill and ensure savings of 6 million pounds per year (something close to $ 35 million).

New technology recycles the energy released during braking of trains and sends it back to the system in the form of electricity.

Initial tests occurred in the substation Cloudesley Road, the Victoria line, and showed good results. In just one week, according to TFL, technology regained enough energy to power the Holborn station, one of the leading London during two days a week.

Also according to the manager of the London Underground, technology could recover 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy per day, enough to electrify 104 houses each year.

In addition to saving on consumption, the ‘recycling’ of energy has the advantage of reducing the amount of heat generated by trains in the walk-and-into the tunnels, which would also help to reduce the energy needed to cool seasons.

The tests, which will continue for another few weeks, are part of a wide of the London Underground modernization program, which also includes the repair of existing infrastructure and installing new lines
