The technology was created by engineers at Oxford University and the Institute Karlsruhe Technology and will be possible to produce memory chips up to 100 times faster than an SSD.
The process that allows such a feat is complex. Engineers managed to create a new way of the chips work. They work with light to exchange data within the chip without the need to convert electrical signals into light, which makes the process much faster and allowing speeds up to 100 times faster.
One of those responsible for creating the new technology said: “The photonic storage system can greatly improve performance in existing architectures by reducing the latencies associated with electrical memories and potentially eliminate the optoelectronic conversions. Furthermore, photonic memories of more than one level with random access may allow further expand the computational capabilities “
