Saudi Arabia finds high-tech barrier on the border with … – Daily News – Funchal

Saudi Arabia completed construction of a thick barrier that separates yesterday from the territory of Iraq and must protect it north of infiltration of people, weapons and goods, announced the official news agency SPA.

This barrier of 900 kilometers, which includes five coatings is the first step in a project that includes the construction of these structures with high-tech barriers along all borders of the kingdom, a total of 9,000 kilometers .

According to the SPA, this protection covers the entire area of Hafr al-Baten (northeast) to Turaif (northwest), near the border with Jordan.

The structure must be equipped with watchtowers, infrared cameras and about 50 allow radars to “reduce to zero the number of infiltrators and the smuggling of drugs, weapons and goods” on the northern border the kingdom, state news agency adds.

The relations between Saudi Arabia and Iraq have deteriorated during the regime of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who in August finally agreed to leave the office.

The Sunni kingdom has accused Maliki, a Shiite, of having contributed to the onslaught of ‘jihadists’ of the Islamic State (EI) in northern Iraq due to its policy of marginalization of Iraq’s Sunni minority. In turn, Maliki often accused Wahhabi kingdom of supporting “terrorism” in Iraq.

Saudi Arabia decided to build a barrier of high-tech security on its border with Iraq in 2006 when the neighboring country was involved in a violent intercommunal conflict.

Then, the Saudi leadership extended the project to set the boundaries, terrestrial and maritime kingdom.

Between 2003 and 2006, Saudi Arabia was hit by a wave of attacks attributed the Al-Qaeda that caused dozens of deaths. Following a relentless response, the kingdom has imposed several setbacks to extremist networks, including the arrest of thousands of suspects.
