 Selfie

You should already be tired of reading the news here Canaltech about the dangers caused by addiction to mobile devices. But to what extent this dependence on our smartphones and tablets can be harmful not only for ourselves but also for our relationships with others?

This is one of the topics discussed by Andrew Hoskins, University researcher Glasgow, Scotland, currently in São Paulo to attend the 8th edition of the Forum Permanent Knowledge Management, Communication and Memory, held this TUESDAY Tuesday (19). Hoskins asks how digital technologies are changing the way current events become memory and how these tools are connected beyond the limits.

One example is selfies, self-portraits taken by the user using the camera of a mobile phone. The term has been around for some time, but became a worldwide craze after the Oscars in 2014, when the presenter Ellen Degeneres recorded a selfie with other artists. It was enough that millions of people around the world adopt the practice almost as an increasingly common activity of daily.

But the limits cited by Hoskins are starting to appear. Last week, during the funeral of former governor of Pernambuco and former candidate for the presidency of the Republic, Eduardo Campos (PSB), many people who visited the site selfies posted on social networks from the political side of the widow, to Renata Campos and even beside the coffin where the body was de Campos. For Hoskins, such an attitude shows that you stay connected all the time – and the main, become an integral part of the experience of being anywhere – has become a kind of compulsion

“The notion of that. public is turned to technology. ago And now what I call a compulsion for connectivity. So the question to ask is why people are taking selfies Why they are constantly recording everything?’s partly the idea that is being in a public space today is to understand what a certain experience or event, “Hoskins said in an interview with BBC Brazil. “Technology has always been present in this sense, but to me there is a point where we got too far.’s Record when the event becomes more important to see what is being recorded. Moment I think that we are living now.”

The Scottish researcher says he understands that the current generation is different from past eras, especially the issue of media coverage of the events that changed a lot in the last five years. In this case, Hoskins believes users think of this generation standard constant record of places and people, and their publication in the online world. “They think this is a routine of what it means to be part of a live event. (…) When I go to a show, I wanna see one Band , I’m going to see the performance. I do not want someone in front of me shaking the phone, a camera or an iPad. But I’m from another generation, I find it strange, “he explains.

While criticize compulsive users, Hoskins admits that smartphones are part of the sociality of everyday life – including himself – and, given the penetration these devices in our lives, it is impossible to escape them. However, these devices are creating a named by Hoskins as emptying the memory effect. In his book iMemory , he mentions that memory today is less a matter of remembering and more a matter of knowing where to look. This is because there is a decrease of human memory because of our growing reliance on technology. “Now, if I can not remember, I can type and appears to me,” he said.

In November last year, a group of researchers from the United States demonstrated this finding. They found that excessive use of the internet, especially search sites, like Google, is increasing the levels of a forgotten population. Like computers and cell phones, these seekers have become “extensions of our intelligence” instead of separate tools. As a result, we are increasingly prone to forget the events that not researched at internet .

According to scientists, people now rely more in digital media than in its own memory to store information. In view of these users, storing data electronically, as in the cloud or other mechanisms, is more secure, reliable and foolproof than keeping everything in one’s mind or someone else. The researchers concluded that the internet is taking place not only of other people as external memory sources, but also of our cognitive faculties.

“The big change is that confidence in communication and information technologies to create memories, to socialize and to learn is going to be an addiction. And this is the critical point. Having these technologies is good, in my opinion. But depend on them is another thing.’s notion of compulsion for connectivity suggests to me that we are dependent.’s this thing can not stay without checking messages on your phone without taking pictures. De can not be disconnected for some time, because we feel alone and alienated, “Hoskins said.
