Make the molecular diagnosis of diseases through a system “quick and simple” nanotechnology is the function of the Nano4 Global, a company of Lisbon, which, after 12 years of research is now looking to launch globally.
Pedro Baptista, professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon, explained to Lusa news agency as founded the company, jointly with Alexandra Fernandes and Filipe Assoreira, and how the project became a company, officially formed only at the end of last year.
“it Is a company that aims to trade the research done over the last 12 years in the College, use of nanotechnology for molecular diagnosis, diagnosis of human diseases, identification of pathogens,” he explained.
After the academic work to have reached its “state right-of-maturation” the founding fathers now want more investment and international projection, making use of the true name of the company: Nano4 Global.
“our goal is to provide the Nano4 and its potential. If all goes well, I would like to be at the Web Summit looking for a more advanced level of investment for globalization,” said Peter Baptista.
The Nano4 Global was one of the 67 'startups’ elected to represent Portugal at the Web Summit, one of the largest technology events in the world that is held in November in Lisbon.
“We are looking for more investment. This ecosystem is very fragile and these are companies that are taking their first steps, and the Web Summit is an excellent forum, not only presentation, but also learning with other companies,” said Peter Baptist.
The responsible acknowledged that there is great support of the State in companies in this area at an early stage, but that later turns out to not be enough.
“you need an initial investment to start with the research and prove that the project can go to the market. Later, when the project is already matured, it needed another capital injection to be able to globalize and export the project, and it is in this phase that many companies cannot stand,” he explained.
On the Nano4, Peter the Baptist, explained that the company focuses primarily on the diagnosis.
“The idea is to have a system quick and simple and allows you to do so, in a way very close to the patient, a diagnosis of the disease, whatever it is,” said the responsible, stressing that, in less than 20 minutes, it is possible to have a result to be reported to a central laboratory.
The company works already with some hospitals, like the Hospital of the Capuchins, and others associated with the monitoring of tuberculosis.
“at This moment we are also working with the institute of production and supply of material diagnostics and diagnostic reagents in Latin America for the introduction of technology which will then be distributed to the entire Latin America and some southern states of the United States,” he added.
The Web Summit is a global conference technology that will take place this year in Lisbon (and in the following two years, with possibility of two more years), where are expected over 50,000 participants, from over 150 countries, including more than 20,000 companies, up to 7,000 presidents, 700 investors and 2,000 international journalists.
