During 54 hours, from Friday to Sunday, 70 young people from Fortaleza tried to develop tools to solve problems in areas such as health, education, urban mobility, employment, among others. For this, the participants of Startup Weekend Change Makers Fortaleza, held in Conjunto Palmeiras, received 15 experts help in entrepreneurship, technological development, and designers. The event, which has been conducted in more than 100 countries, aims to create startups that have social impacts and are economically viable.
“Our idea is to transform communities through technology and innovation” says Gabriela Aires, organizer of Startup Weekend Fortaleza. She says the expectation is that in addition to impact the neighborhood where the event occurs, the created solutions can be replicated in all regions of Fortaleza, and even in other parts of the world. “The Conjunto Palmeiras was chosen as one of the districts with the lowest human development index in Fortaleza.”
According to one of the event mentors, Maurílio Alberone, cofounder of Edools, focused startup online course management the demands identified by participants in Fortaleza are similar to those he met in Rio de Janeiro communities (RJ). “What we saw here is that a major problem for these people is health management, people who want to make an appointment but do not know if you doctor. To Alberone the success of a startup depends, among other factors, the amount of people that will benefit from their products. “Making money with an application is only a consequence of solving a real problem and how many people are willing to pay for it,” he says. “What matters is that the participants here are willing to turn ideas into reality, as there are many companies that need good projects that create social impact, but do not have resources for research.”
In addition to the utility of the service offered, the success of a startup depends on your business model, as well as in any company, says Alberone. “They should be more concerned with the validation of the products to customers, with sales and not only with the development of codes or programming. You must be attend to all that is necessary to build a new business. “
Have Evandro Ariki, co-founder of Application Factory and also mentor the Startup Weekend, believes that one of the main legacies of the event is to raise curiosity in the participants. “All they can, yes, become entrepreneurs. They can indeed change the community through a product, a service or a technology that will improve the quality of life.
