“Big Bang” postponed – Morning Post

Lightning strike delays reopening of the CERN machine.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC, its acronym in English) should start operating on Wednesday, after two years of stop

But one “intermittent short circuit”, discovered on Saturday by CERN -. the European organization for Nuclear Research – will postpone the tests for several days or even weeks. This depending on the time it takes to solve the problem.

Since the magnets that make the protons travel are cooled to temperatures near absolute zero (-273ºC), the machine has to be heated and cooled again , which can take.

This week, the protons should start to travel the circumference of 27 kilometers from the “Big Bang machine”, in preparation for the second phase of experiments with larger amounts of energy.

But scientists are not concerned with this problem. “All the signs are good for a good Second Round. In the big picture, some delay Semans in human demand to realize the universe, is little more than a glance,” said the director general of CERN, Rolf Heuer .

What is the “Big Bang machine”
Large Hadron Collider is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world. This machine consists of a 27 kilometer ring leading particle beams through aceleredoras structures.

Inside, the particles travel in both directions, near the speed of light and the ultimate goal is to make these collide.

With this method, in 2012, found the Higgs boson, or “God particle”, one of the particles that helps explain the physics as known.

The general objective of the next test is to discover the dark matter, learn more about the Higgs boson and to seek a “new physics” beyond the Standard Model,.

The LHC might explain many theories as, for example, the phenomenon of creation of the Universe – the Big Bang -. or the formation of black holes

This machine is at CERN, 175 meters below ground on the French-Swiss border near Geneva.
