Christmas Tree pond: an intelligent technology show – Globo.com

A smart christmas tree, practically independent. It seems the stuff of fiction, but it is already a reality in Rio de Janeiro. The TechTudo visited the largest floating Christmas tree in the world, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. We took a boat and know closely the technological apparatus that sustains it. What we found goes beyond the giant metal frame and thousands of lamps, but an almost infallible tree. We embark on this trip?

Below is the video of the Lagoa Christmas tree in Rio de Janeiro

The Lagoon christmas tree is in its 19th edition and this year’s theme for the show is “a Christmas light.” Up close, it seems even greater. The gigantic structure is 85 meters high, the equivalent of a 28-story building, and weight of 542 tons. For the show are used 3.1 million microlâmpadas (yes, those we used in the tree that we set up at home), 120,000 meters of luminous hose and 24,000 meters of tubular structure. The 2,150 Strobos and 100 LED spotlights transform the trees in a fluorescent light metal structure (is beautiful, especially seen from inside).

According to Omar Jacob, director of Mil Generators (company responsible for producing the energy of the tree), the show is autonomous and intelligent. “We can say that the pond tree today is rather a smart tree. It has an electromechanical brain that helps us predict accidents, is autonomous and is almost impossible for her to leave the audience at hand. In fact, from the point of view engineering, this chance is zero, “he says.

This show of light and technology also has an electronic carillon that plays Christmas songs and chimes of bells. The technology imported from Italy is the same used in the Vatican (even the Pope has arrived in was Hightech). The impression is that the bells are there, view the clarity and fidelity of sound.

But many electronics not work alone. In the group of 1,200 professionals working in design, assembly and tree maintenance, a super power generation system feeds the show that happens every night. Five generators, four 550 kVA and 30 kVA, the latter used for night signaling service make enough energy to make the show happen the tree.

These generators operate at base fuel, but also electronically. The idea is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through electronic resources. Another way to save is the adoption of telemetry, an intelligent technology that measures and communicates information between an operator and a system to develop. But what does this mean in practice?

In the case of power generation and Christmas Tree pond systems, telemetry maps the consumption according to the show and rotates the operation of generators from the demand. So, spend only what is necessary, which saves energy and money. Everything is very simple: Internet, computers and generators give the message. Employees monitor all the work of the machines and are ready for possible problems (which are almost impossible to happen).

Despite the economy, the tree still consumes a lot of energy. Omar estimates that the tree consume somewhere around 15 000 kVA per hour. Without telemetry, the consumption would rise to 24 000 kVA per hour, something equivalent to 600 home energy consumption for one month. The savings of 40% reduces this number to around 360 homes. What difference, right?

“The programming of the tree show is made by a specialist and passed to us. With this data we can calculate the time it needs more or less energy to make a conscious consumption. This ensures economy, the prevention of the environment and prevent accidents, “said Omar. This whole system ensures the show the title of intelligent christmas tree. It has been there checking this technology show? The tree will be mounted to the 6th of January and runs between 19:30 and 2pm, Sunday through Thursday, and until 3 on Fridays and Saturdays.
