Engineers from Michigan State University, USA, have developed a way to generate power by human movement, using a device that can be folded to create more force with the simple act of touch and pinch the screen to navigate between the functions.

In the experiment in the laboratory, the researchers were able to operate with a LCD screen sensitive to the touch, a luminaire with 20 LED bulbs and a flexible keyboard only with this device, without the support of a battery. The feat was described in the journal "Nano Energy", and suggests that "we are on the way to create devices wearable supplied by human movement”.

The innovative process begins with a kind of "silicon wafer", which is manufactured with multiple layers of ultra-thin, with substances which include silver, polyimide (the polymer from monomers of imide, suitable for use at high temperatures) and the polypropylene electric iron. Ions are added so that each layer contains charged particles. In this way, electrical energy is generated when the device is pressed by the human movement.

The device is as thin as a sheet of paper, and can be adapted to different sizes and applications. To fuel the LED lights, it was necessary to a device of the size of the palm of the hand and for the LCD screen, was used a device as small as a finger.

The researchers emphasize some advantages of the technology, such as light weight, flexibility, scalability and low cost. In addition, the device becomes more powerful when folded.

— Each time you fold, you increase exponentially the amount of voltage created, ” said Sepulveda. — You can start with a large device, but you can fold it several times, making it much smaller and with more energy. He can become small enough to be placed in the heel of the shoe and generate energy every time they step in.
