Engineers develop Wi-Fi technology that consumes 10 thousand times … – SAPO Tek

The Wi-Fi is a technology that is “aggressive” to the battery of a smartphone, but this phrase may not make sense in a future (very) close.

In the United States, a team of engineers from the University of Washington have managed to develop transmitters Wi-Fi that work just like the current, but with a particularity: they use 10,000 times less power. To date, the experiments conducted with this technology has not yet registered transmission speeds higher than 11 megabits, but the researchers shall ensure that the transmitters are ready to operate in “real contexts and with real equipment”.

“we Wanted to know if we could reach a point at which the transmitters did not use nearly the power,” said Shyam Gollakota, one of the engineers involved in the project, adding that the goal was almost reached.

The first results have already been formally published and will be presented for the first time in public at the Symposium on the Design and Implementation of Operating Systems in the next month of march.

The technology has not yet been reviewed by an independent entity, but MIT already considered one of the most innovative technologies of 2016.

In practice, the application of this technology can help you to keep the battery of your smartphone for one more day than normal, but, more importantly, to achieve a more sustainable, contexts dominated by connected devices (IoT).
