Portuguese sound technology in action in Hollywood movies – SAPO Tek

Ninja Turtles Heroes Mutants: The Breaking Of Shadows , Independence Day: New Threat , Ghostbusters and the Magnificent Seven are some of the movies that are “on stage” in Portugal and counted in your audio production with the support of Sound Particles, a software created by Nuno Fonseca, professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.

This is a new technology that allows you to simulate computer thousands of sounds simultaneously and “was essentially designed for large Hollywood productions, those that include epic scenes with thousands of things happening at the same time,” explains Nuno Fonseca.

the program replaces the traditional manual process and that is to go adding sound after sound, a task that can superimpose over 100 sounds simultaneously. “With this technology, the software can create thousands and thousands of sounds, saving time and getting more realistic results,” the creator of the software.

With the use of this software, the user can quickly “ask” 10 000 particles (sounds), scattered km2 1, go to fetch sound library 200 sounds of war, for example, and to obtain the final sound based on the standard Dolby 9.1 Atmos. “The result is a more realistic sound, in much less time,” assures Nuno.

In an interview with TeK, the also responsible for the degree in Digital Games and Multimedia of the aforementioned institution tells how the idea came creating the Sound Particles. “There are about ten years I noticed that the most interesting special effects in film used particle systems – thousands or millions of tiny dots that together create the illusion of fire, rain, smoke, dust. And at the time I thought it would be great to use the same technology for sound, generating thousands of sounds at once, “says Nuno Fonseca
