Technology allows quadriplegic move hand with the thought – Globo.com

.

A scientific study published on Wednesday (13) revealed the unprecedented case of a quadriplegic patient who could do more elaborate hand movements using the very thought

You think, I will pass the card credit – and your hand obeys. But Ian Burkhart can only do this because of a revolution in science. Six years ago, he broke his neck on the beach and became a quadriplegic

. “I kept thinking: maybe one day something happens and change it,” says Ian

. 2014 Ian ran into a risky experience. Researchers implanted a chip in his brain. The chip captures neurological signs, sends to a computer that decodes Ian’s will and sends electrical signals to a special glove that activates the muscles.

The technology was named Bypass, or neural deviation, because it creates a link between the brain and muscles without relying on the spinal cord, which was injured.

Two years ago, Ian could only open and close the hand. Since then, he went through an intensive training session, until scientists and computers were able to better decipher his mind. The research, published in the journal “Nature”, says this is the first time that a quadriplegic can do so sophisticated hand movements.

Ian pours the contents of a bottle, plays guitar in a video game . precise movements in the fingers, hand and wrist, which go unnoticed in our day-to-day.

The researcher Chad Baldi says the technology is not the solution now, but it can also help victims paralysis, stroke and brain damage.

Ian, who dreams of being video editor, says it now has more hope for the future. Part of the progress he had hoped for finally happened.
