Parents ask for help to the children in time to use new technologies – Journal News

Parents believe the use of new technologies decreased communication with their children.

Seven in ten parents ask for help to the children to use the phone and four in ten rely on children for explanations on how to use the computer or surfing the Internet. These are the results of the investigation of the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) Spanish, published on Tuesday.

The same research finds that the use of new technologies in recent years has caused a negative impact on communication between parents and children, damaged relationships between couples and increased family conflicts.

Nine out of ten parents recognized that new technologies have changed the everyday family and pointed out that young people “have dependence.” Although almost the same proportion of respondents believe that “it is a problem for the family in education”, it admits that the influence of this innovation is “inevitable.”

Parents also considered that the appropriate age for the children have access to social networks is between 16 and 18 (40%) or between 12 and 15 years (39.6%). But when the researchers asked at what age the children started to use these tools, the majority (45%) said that between 6 and 11 years.

Still, half of the respondents believe that the use of the Internet should start between 12 and 15 years, something that does not correspond to reality (young people begin to use the Internet between 6 and 11 years).

15.6% of parents fear that their children are harassed or intimidated exchange for sexual favors. So, say that the greatest risks are the spread of photos or incriminating videos (37.7%) or revealing too much information (22.9%).

Although the surveyed parents believe that new technologies allow making new friends or to relate with relatives who live far away, they argue that they isolate those who use, make users “lazy” and help to “waste” of time.

survey done in March focused on the use and influence of the Internet, phone or social networking on the personal and family life of respondents. 2,467 people were consulted through personal interviews, of which about 92% use the phone and 72.1% use Whatsapp or other instant messaging application.
