infrared camera-based technology analyzes … – euronews

German researchers have developed a new technology to analyze ancient documents. Thanks to an infrared camera, you can see the watermark of the manuscripts. This information allows to know the date and source of the documents. The technology is being tested in the Berlin Library.

“When I put the paper in this hot plate can see the watermark and at that precise moment I can record it and transmit this information to the computer. In this short period of a few seconds I can see the picture quite clearly, but without the paint. That is the principle, “he said Hagen Immel, one of the researchers involved in the project.

By the early twentieth century, paper manufacturers put a watermark on the products worked as a logo.

“watermarks are particularly important when analyzing handwritten documents and when we determine the age of a document and where it was written. We can find out the date and where the document was written more easily thanks to the watermark, “explained Martina Rebmann, director of the Music Department of the Berlin Library.

Based on the infrared camera technology was developed by Fraunhofer Institute and the University of Braunschweig. The system can be applied to various types of works. The only drawback is the price. The machine costs about 100 thousand euros. In the future, the researchers hope to develop a smaller, cheaper model.
