Scientists create glove comes Osteoarthritis – Technology – Saturday – Saturday Magazine

Deborah Pereira and Elsa Filipa Sousa, researchers of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), have developed a type of glove oriented to treat through the heat osteoarthritis and chilblains.

“we combine technology, science and design to create a product that, although it can be used by anyone, was created especially for those suffering from these diseases using heat as a treatment,” he told Lusa Deborah Pereira.

osteoarthritis is a chronic joint disease that causes degeneration of cartilage and bone and causes pain, stiffness and reduced functionality.

the project gave rise to the startup Smart gloves, founded in September 2015, which uses the surface thermotherapy in the creation of his gloves, and these may serve as an alternative to costly treatments and consumption of drugs.

According to the researcher, the gloves are produced with a “like material with a fabric, that behaves as resistance and allowing it to be heated,” unlike conventional gloves that only isolate the skin from the outside air.

the heating system incorporated into the product is automatic and allows you to adjust the temperature.

“While it is possible to wash the material, we now see how we can attach the device that regulates the temperature to make fully washable glove,” he adds.

the product, in development and testing by June 2016, will be marketed from 2017, at pharmacies and drug stores, said co-founder.
