Depending on significant wealth of experience in the field of hybrid technology, the result of technical development carried out in the most exclusive sports as the Porsche 918 Spyder or the BMW i8 GKN Driveline is now seeking to transfer this same technology of high end vehicles for more affordable C-segment compact.

the first step, taken by this company was developing a module called eAxle that will allow the builders adopt hybrid plug-in technology in their C-segment models to very controlled cost with the benefit of improved benefits and reduce CO2 emissions by about 50%.

the new eAxle is an evolution the system GKN developed for the Porsche 918 Spyder with technical diagram of a single speed to lowest weight (a mere 20.9 kg) while optimizing efficiency and more compact module that makes possible to install more models. This system can provide a torque of up to 2000 Nm and 65 kW (88 hp) of power for electric driving dynamics and reduced fuel consumption and emissions. According to estimates revealed by GKN, a segment model C Plug-in Hybrid could have a power of conventional motor of 100 kW that would join, so a value of 65 kW eAxle, which would have the power to reduce CO2 emissions below 50 g / km.

the front wheel drive vehicle platforms can integrate light and compact modules eAxle on the rear axle in order to achieve a combination of plug-in hybrid with features wheel drive thanks to the electric motor.

“GKN leads the industry in eAxle technology and we want to make plug-in hybrids as a mere upgrade for consumers and builders. With our proven systems in top sports and SUV Premium, builders are now working with us to launch GKN technology in a much broader vehicle range, “said the president of GKN Automotive, Peter Moelgg, referring not only the work of the company in the development of the 918 Spyder Porsche, but also the SUV Volvo XC90 in its hybrid variant T8 Twin Engine.
