New technology allows them to feel impacts in virtual reality – GameOver

15.Nov.2015 18:50

research team has succeeded in developing a new sensor which gives users the ability to feel impact on VR.

A team of lab researchers Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany developed a new technology capable of reproducing the impact of objects or other outside forces to users of virtual reality peripherals .

Entitled Impact, the new technology is in the prototype stage and works by using various sensors attached ns arms, legs, or feet, of the players in collaboration with virtual reality peripherals and your software.

A simulation of the impact is achieved through a combination between a haptic vibration motor and an electric muscle stimulator that can recreate the feeling of being pushed, touched or receive other real objects, going beyond Typical vibration of the console commands

“The main idea to allow the small and light impact can simulate a heavy blow is the decomposition of stimulation:. is able to reproduce the tactile sensation when touching the skin a solenoid; adds impact to the coup to retract the user’s arm with electrical stimulation, “explained the responsible for the research team, Pedro Lopes. “The device is autonomous, wireless and small enough to be used, leaving you free to users and able to move without any problems in a virtual environment.”

The Impact is still far from being commercialized, but the team is already expanding the technology to be able to recognize sensors for the abdomen and shoulders.

Do you think this type of technology can boost immersiveness of virtual reality or feel they have other features in the future?
