The Lisbon City Council announced on Thursday that the city is in the final to receive the Web Summit, one of the largest technology conferences and entrepreneurship in Europe which last year had 22,000 participants in Dublin.

                     

                         “The application of Lisbon to the Web Summit 2016 organization is another safe step in the consolidation of our city as the preferred venue for the realization of major events worldwide in the area of ​​entrepreneurship and technology and innovation sector,” said the president of camera, Fernando Medina, in a statement. “Lisbon is a startup city and it is not by chance.”

The Portuguese capital now faces competition from Amsterdam. Among the selection criteria are the ability to accommodate the participants and the connection of cities to technological entrepreneurship,

The bid to host the event was announced by the government last month. The process is being carried out by Turismo de Portugal, the Tourism Association of Lisbon and the AICEP an investment promotion agency in Portugal.

It was however created the Facebook group supporting the Portuguese application , which has close to 1,800 people.

The Web Summit is held since 2010 in the Irish city of Dublin and became a well-known event in the technology conference circuit. On the agenda of this year, held in early November, is the president of Pixar Animation Studios, Ed Catmull; the director of technology of Facebook, Mike Schroepfer; a founder of Instagram, Mike Kriege; and the creator of the antivirus Kaspersky, Eugene Kaspersky.

In addition to the conferences, the Web Summit also includes a startup contest, in which they make a presentation to a jury and also to an audience with thousands potential investors or business partners. Last year, the Codacy, a company that was born in Portugal despite being registered in the United Kingdom was one of the competition winners.
