The taekwondo can be a sport of ancient origins, but has adapted to modernity like no other. automatic scoring, video replay … The technology is already integrated into the competition and shares responsibility with referees to ensure fair struggles for athletes and fans. Closed on Sunday (21) the International Tournament of Taekwondo brought into the Carioca Arena 1 the latest in Korean martial art for the Olympics, which include a new competition area format and more technology in the scoring system: now even the head restraints are equipped with electronic sensors.
“We decided to invest in technology to help arbitration. We want to win the best fighter “
Phillippe Bouedo, Chief coach of the WTF
Before the London 2012 Games, the scoring system depended exclusively on the assessment of the referees, who attributed points according to the blows that testified. It opened precedent for constant complaints of athletes and technical officials, who considered that the sport sinned in transparency and impartiality – in Beijing in 2008, Sarah Stevenson, of Great Britain, came to be eliminated from the competition after a decisive blow in the dying seconds of the clash not have been punctuated by arbitration. The result was reversed after replays of television channels show that the coup was valid -. And the British finished the Olympic tournament with the bronze medal
The fact caught the attention of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). And to prevent the sport could be removed from the Olympic program for the next editions, the International Taekwondo Federation (WTF) began the series of innovations that would renew the sport.

“The technology left the fairer fight. And that was the best thing that could have happened “
Myriam Baverel, Olympic former athlete and coach of the team of France
goal of taekwondo athletes remains the same as ever: to reach the trunk and head of the opponent with kicks and punches. The difference is that now they wear magnetized socks and impact sensors on vests and head protectors. – The latter, a novelty at the Olympic Games in Rio
The feature was what was needed to reduce to almost zero chance of errors in the arbitration as it kicks to the head are worth three times more than blows to the torso and often decide the conflicts. “The new technologies have transparency to the sport. In London, we insert sensors on vests but no helmets. In Rio for the first time in the history of the Games, we will have both, “added Bouedo.

The Rio 2016 team works in partnership with Omega, a technology company partner of the IOC in management of results. “There are several systems that work together seamlessly and at an impressive way. Once the athlete gives the kick, the sensors transmit the signal automatically in a wireless frequency, which takes about 0.1 to 0.2 tenths of a second to be computed in all our systems, “said Rodrigo Silveira, results coordinator of the Committee.
in this way, the technology put up strength precision in the rules of the game, which even affected the strategy of the athletes and coaches for competitions. “It is easier to train because athletes need only worry about being efficient and not have to show the beauty of the movements to get the point,” said the French coach.
Another feature included to eliminate doubts in the sport is the possibility of requesting the replay video during the clashes, a feature that allows the analysis of the blow whenever there is doubt on the mat.

“The inclusion of these resources requires the athlete to always be adapting, which is very good. I started in the sport at a time that technology was not present, so there was little doubt in the outcome of fights. This has now disappeared, because it eliminated the human error. Is certainly the way to go, “said the Portuguese player Rui Bragança, who won the silver medal in the category up to 58kg in the test event.
Last day of #EventoTeste #Taekwondo and technology is on the rise! Vests and helmets have electronic sensors to compute the points according to the agreed blows.

2016 promises more action, music and spectacle
After meeting our critical sport athletes and coaches leaving the fairest fight, WTF turned his attention to the viewing public. Some news that the organization prepares for the Olympic competition in August aims to engage fans through music, acrobatics or simply more moments of action.
The competition area, for example, arrives in Rio a new format: the octagon, which prevents athletes use the corners of the mat to act on the defensive. Another solution to the federation found to make the most active competitors on the mat was to change the rules to include penalties every time stay long without attacking.

“We want athletes struggling more and more. Therefore we penalize whenever there is action and give bonus points for more complex moves. The Octagon also helps to keep the fight going without forcing the player out, “Bouedo said.
The presentation of sport also changed. Now, announcers, DJs and music experts and sport make the entry of athletes in the arena an event in the competition, as is already done in MMA and boxing clashes.
Another innovation to improve the sporting spectacle is the inclusion in the Olympic Games, a mode display show with acrobatic performances for the ranges of competition.
Carioca Arena 1 through the 4th test

With three successful events in the curriculum, the Carioca Arena 1 hosted the event taekwondo-test. During the Games, the competition of the game will take place on Arena Carioca 3, which follows the same lines of the neighbor.
“This is the fourth event we do in Arena 1, then we know all the secrets of the installation. Still, taekwondo brought some news for our operation, such as the installation of a high competition area and the electronic scoring system. Everything went very well and we are satisfied with the result, “said Rodrigo Garcia, Sports Director of the Rio 2016.
