Users report lock on WhatsApp – Globo.com

Members of three mobile telephony operators in Brazil – Claro, Tim and Vivo – reported that WhatsApp went off the air late in the evening of Wednesday (16). Reports began around 23.30. The main mobile phone operators in the country were ordered by the courts to block the messages application of service throughout the country for 48 hours, from the 0h of Thursday (17).

The receipt of the court order was confirmed by the National Union of Telephone Companies and Mobile and Personal Services, the SindiTelebrasil, representing Vivo operators, Claro, Tim, Hi, Sercomtel and Algar.

The Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) said that the decision came from the 1st Criminal Court of São Bernardo do Campo, in the ABC, and runs secret justice in a criminal action. According to the TJ-SP, WhatsApp did not respond to a court order of July 23, 2015. The company was notified again on August 7, with a fine fixed in the event of non-compliance.

WhatsApp did not meet again to determine, according to the TJ-SP. Therefore, “the prosecutor requested the blocking of services for a period of 48 hours, based on the law of the Civil the internet Marco”.

Eduardo Levy, president of SindiTelebrasil says that operators are required to meet the determination and that is not in their interest block WhatsApp in the country. “We are interested in rules that are lighter for the industry,” said Levy to G1 .

History
This is not the first attempt to block WhatsApp in the country. In February, a judge in Teresina (PI) determined that operators temporarily suspend access to messaging app.

The reason would be a WhatsApp’s refusal to provide information to a police investigation which had since 2013.
