Specialized in supporting startups to achieve scale, the consultant’s UK Ketan Makwana (photo) was in Florianópolis in the World Junior Business Conference and gave a talk to businessmen from Santa Catarina Association of Technology Companies ( Acate) Friday. In an interview to the column, he told how he helped the government of his country to adopt plan that opened 100,000 jobs in the technology area in three years.
How startups can achieve scale?
People have wanted to start a startup, have motivation, but often do not make the validation of business. Validate means to know about the new market that is entering the future of this market. This is important because the entrepreneur assumes results and makes a research to validate what is releasing. So can the pilot project and, in doing so, is creating a model. What gives scale is to multiply the model that the company tested from the theory.
Can you cite successful examples?
I will give two examples, one of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland North) and another in Guatemala. I like talking Guatemala because I understand that the ecosystem of them may be similar to that of Brazil. The UK example is a company that makes recruiting people using data. Three young people started this company, the youngest was 21 and the other two, 26. I was the mentor of them. Profiles for selection were always made in a common way, but they managed to make a more refined way. Sometimes, people were rejected because of a small line. With this technological process, the selection was better, there is no rejection because of an insignificant detail. They created the company because they faced the problem. They had training but were always rejected when seeking a vacancy. And realized that the selection of companies had a lot of resumes standing, it seemed that people did not fit. They wanted 150,000 pounds to get the business. Then a recruiting company offered them 200,000 pounds and 35,000 resumes were active. Each of these curricula worth 4000 pounds. For this company have believed them, called Microsoft’s attention, which included their process in the new Office and just purchased LinkedIn, the largest human resources company in the world. A company of 18 months, based on technology could not only invest, it attracted two giant customers who helped grow more.
And the advancement of Guatemala?
I’ve been working for three years with the Guatemalan government. The country is ranked fifth in the world among the most attractive Silicon Valley investments in startups disruptive technology. They were not doing anything for three years in innovation because the government did not see technology as important for the future. We analyzed about why Guatemala is attractive. There hesitate Luis von Ahn, who created the Duolingo teaching languages for free. There is also a security code inventor of all PCs. They began three years ago a process of strengthening the technology industry, opened a space like that of Acate focused on technology and innovation. All business school programs have focused more entrepreneurship. They currently have 32 accelerator companies. All that was research, now seen business companies. Technology and innovation are at the center of what they are doing. We next five years, the next Unicorn world can come from Guatemala. It would be a person who would invent something that becomes a global giant like Facebook or Pokémon Go.
How to create an ecosystem to accelerate the technology sector in Brazil?
it is necessary to facilitate the start of business, reduce taxes and fees and to facilitate access of large companies from outside to come in Brazil and can do business here. They can bring out technology and boost business. An example is Nintendo. They decided not to open the Pokémon Go in Brazil because it was so expensive and difficult all the legal issues, taxation, validation. This product could open doors to very important service innovations. This single product would release so much good. This is difficult because there is more greed to make money (taxes) than make it easier for the growing economy. He collaborated with the UK government project to accelerate technology sector.
What was done and how were the results?
I was adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for three years. We work to make it easier for the people to be able to open businesses. People 18 to 24 were able to put business running more easily. With investments of 175 million pounds by the government 35 000 companies were opened and with it, they were created 100,000 new jobs. They did not have to pay employment rate from bringing in people under 25 years old. The taxation, instead of 20%, fell to 10%. The ecosystem is growing much because of it.
