The major US technology companies have joined security experts, independent developers and advocates of civil liberties that have filed court documents supporting Apple in its fight against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, the acronym in English) osbre encrypted iPhone used by an extremist killer.
Several law enforcement groups, in turn, submitted documents in support of federal authorities who want to help Apple to access the encrypted iPhone used by Syed Farook, one of the San Bernardino shooters.
Relatives of five people who were killed also supported the FBI. But the husband of a woman who survived the attack expressed support for Apple, claiming fear that demand the FBI would set a bad precedent and added that he does not believe that the phone has useful information.
Some of the largest competitors Apple defended the company said in a document issued on Thursday.
“The government’s position, should prevail, will compromise the security of sensitive information in the country,” said a statement from Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo and other companies. “The law does not allow federal agents to recruit companies to end their own security mechanisms and product designs.”
Several trade associations and a group of 17 smaller teconolgia companies, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Airbnb, and Reddit also posted next to Apple. Source: Associated Press
