Toyota will test its new technology Smart Key Box in a fleet used by the service share of vehicles north american Getaround in the coming year, expanding its effort to benefit from the new mobility services viewed by some as a threat to the traditional purchase of vehicles.
The largest automaker in the world has confirmed last week that it has invested in Getaround, after a partnership with Uber to charter vehicles and speed up the research on mobile technologies.
Toyota’s investments the following movements similar to rivals such as General Motors and Volkswagen with the automakers global adapting in the face of change in the sector.
“We do not consider that these new services will be negative for us,” said the head of the company, Connected Car, Toyota, Shigeki Tomoyama, told reporters on Tuesday.
Toyota plans to install the new software on almost all of their cars sold in Japan and in the U.S. in 2020, said Tomoyama, allowing drivers to access remote data services from their cell phones and use big data to provide updates on traffic conditions and maps in real time.
Among the tools of the Smart Key Box that will be tested with the Getaround are the ability to control doors and start engines by means of the smartphone, said Toyota.
