Earlier this year, the Russian photographer Egor Tsvetko took pictures of people he did not know the subway St. Petersburg and used FindFace application to identify them through their profiles on VK, a kind of Russian Facebook.
the free app, for now, is available only in Russia, but the startup NTechLab, which is behind the technology used in FindFace says it is preparing an online platform for any company that wants to use the technology facial recognition.
the co-founder Alexander Kabakov says that the company wants to devote to the facial recognition technology in the same way that Google has established itself as a search engine on the web. “We want to equip all the cameras around the world with facial recognition,” he explains.
According to the creators of FindFace, the application has been downloaded more than 600,000 times since February and users have made more than 3 million searches in the 100 million profiles that are present in VK. From the total, 70% of searches were successful.
Kabakov says it has received around 300 applications for businesses and government agencies, including the US and China, who want to use the startup algorithms.
in fact, facial recognition is already used by large companies such as Google, Apple and Facebook, who use technology to identify people in images to organize photos and suggest tags of friends. The difference is that all this is done within their own platforms and available only to a user, while the NTechLab wants its technology to be used by all.
The biggest concern of experts is about privacy and safety of people who are photographed. But Kabakov does not care too much about it, because, he said, the app shows only public information about the person. “We work with engineering search, like Google. We indexed public information that is on social networks, “he explains. “FindFace is an instrument, then it is clear that people with bad intentions can end up using,” adds
The entrepreneur explains that facial recognition can be used very well to find people on the Internet:. Technology can help analyze the age of people who are in shopping malls, cinemas and casinos, for example, leaving aside the need to ask for identity and run the risk of receiving a false document.
in addition, Moscow government is considering the possibility of using technology in 150,000 cameras around the city to help in tracking and catching criminals.
