A technology developed in France can help the government of Pernambuco to improve the monitoring of sharks in the state’s coast. This is the Chrisar-LAB, a software capable of discovering the location of an underwater animals through the sounds he emits. The details were provided by the European Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation on Tuesday (14).
The equipment, produced by Chrisar group 17 years ago, consists of a technological apparatus that connects the computer to a microphone and an antenna placed into the sea. The process begins when the microphone picks up the sounds in the ocean and passes these noises to the antenna. Then the device sends the sound frequency of each sound to the program installed on the computer, informing the point where the noise comes from.
“The software receives a wi-fi connection and identifies the sound was issued by a shark, within a frequency range which we know we are the animal. The microphone is capable of capturing sound to hundreds of kilometers away, “said the representative of Chrisar in Brazil, Michel-Henri Perennes.
With the information of who issued the noise and the point where the animal is the Shark attack Monitoring Committee (CEMETERY) the state of the Social Defense Secretariat can act to warn swimmers about the imminence of an attack. They can also be carried out measures to prevent the shark from the shore.
The idea of making the software emerged in the early 90s in order to prevent the deaths of whales colliding with ships in the Mediterranean Sea. Since the equipment is designed to detect the presence of mammal, not a fish, you still need to figure out how the Chrisar-LAB can specifically identify the sounds transmitted by sharks. For this, a new study is needed.
“It is an application of interest to the state. We have to see what they (the French) already have to bring the bodies and develop a kind of partnership. We should explore, but have to find niches with companies and researchers here to develop this technology in Pernambuco. They brought the idea and we will discuss where to find funding for research, “says Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation of the state, Lucia Melo.
Remember
last year, Pernambuco registered the only shark attack in Brazil. According to research conducted by the University of Florida, US, 2015 was a year of attacks ever around the world. The only case recorded in the country this year was a paranaense tourist who lost his hand and part of his right arm after being bitten on the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Since 1992, 24 people died in attacks in Pernambuco coast.
