Congress enact amendment on encouraging science and … – Portal Brazil

Formal sitting will be held on February 26. Objective is to promote research and encourage the creation of technology solutions

The National Congress will hold a solemn session, on Thursday (26) at 11 am, to promulgate Constitutional Amendment No. 85, 2015, which ensures the activities of Science, Technology and Innovation, treatment as a matter of priority of state. The session will take place in the Plenary of the Federal Senate in Brasilia.

Approved by the Senate in December, the amendment comes from the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 290/13, changing constitutional provisions to improve coordination between the State and research institutions both public and private.

The aim is to stimulate scientific and technological development and innovation, with the intention to boost domestic research and the creation technology solutions that improve the performance of the productive sector. The constitutional changes also allow the integration of technological research institutions and companies, combining efforts to develop the country.

One of the novelties in the text is the expansion of the entities that may receive financial support from the Government. Currently, only university research and extension activities can receive this support. With the text, in addition to universities, vocational and technological education institutions may be supported
