Audi has announced that the vehicles the A4 and the Q7 are the first on the market to receive the technology Traffic Light Information (TFI), which connects cars with traffic lights. This is also, according to the company, the first communication service between a commercial vehicle and road infrastructure of the world, in addition to a great leap forward for the segment of the connected car and autonomous.
Announced two years ago, the technology uses a central database to pass information to the driver about the traffic, in real time, which appear on the vehicle as a countdown timer. That is, the driver is able to know how much time it will take to get the green light and if it is possible to pass the signal without breaking the speed limit before the traffic light close.
The car connects with the lights through the network to 4G/LTE. The goal of technology is to improve the flow of traffic, since the driver will know exactly when the signal will open, save time, and decrease emissions of pollutants.
As Audi points out, the brakes and acceleration consume a lot of energy and, with the TFI, the driver will know exactly when to stop and accelerate the vehicle. “In our tests, the number of cars should brake to a stop fell around 20%. This saves time for the driver, in addition to a fuel economy of about 15% recorded in the pilot project”.
The technology as it works only in some regions of the city of Las Vegas, in the United States. In the near future, resource should be deployed also in countries of Europe, which will depend on the evolution of the infrastructure and data reception means of each location.
