Questions with Powerline technology? The Pplware accounts! – Pplware

When the subject is Powerline technology (Ethernet for mains) are many questions from readers. Over a few years we have been collecting some of the pertinent issues of users now published with their answers.

Do you know if the powerline adapters work in three-phase networks? What is the maximum range of the powerline devices? Learn the answers to these and other issues.

P. The powerline adapters work in three-phase networks?

R. The powerline technology works in systems with multiple stages. Only you encounter problems if the installation has more than one light meter, since this strongly attenuates the signal.

P. It is necessary to protect a powerline network in the case of a WiFi network?

R. It is not strictly necessary (because the electric meter tend to prevent the signal path between neighbors in the same building, for example), but it is desirable, and can be easily done via buttons on the adapter or software like Devolo Cockpit.

Q. You can use the powerline adapters in making blocks?

R. Yes and no. When we have a block of sockets and have a powerline adapter with making “pass-through”, the ideal is to first connect the adapter and then connect the block using the integrated socket. However, if this is not possible, the powerline adapter can in fact be attached to a block-making, although will lose a part of your performance. This connection is not recommended especially for blocks with integrated protection (Overvoltage protection against interference filters, etc.), which may even prevent the operation of the adapter.

P. What is the maximum range of the powerline devices?

R. In the case of devolo devices that use Range + technology, the maximum theoretical range is 400 m – which means that can be used in virtually any domestic usage scenario, even in homes with multiple floors

P. How many adapters can connect a powerline network?

R. Several dozen !, many more than the number of rooms in your home.

Q. The performance of the powerline also degrades with distance, such as WiFi?

R. Yes, although this degradation is much smaller and much less quickly than wireless networks. Moreover, powerline technology does not suffer from an additional problem of wireless networks, congestion and which is signal interference due to a high number of users to share the same channel.

P. I heard that the operation of microwave and other appliances may interfere with the performance of a powerline network. Is it true?

R. This was a problem especially for pre-HomePlug adapters (85 Mbps) and first-generation HomePlug (200 Mbps) and practically does not affect the new generation (generations 500, 650 and 1200). However, like everything in life depends:. Depends on the quality of the electricity grid and the actual quality of household equipment

Q. The adapters 500 Mbps usually have Fast Ethernet 10/100 ports. This does not limit performance?

R. All powerline device manufacturers use the same generic designations speed (200, 500, 1200 ..) but this does not necessarily have a direct relationship to the actual speed. These numbers refer to the theoretical maximum capacity of the chip in the duplex mode and also include information for “overhead” necessary for proper communication – which causes a 10/100 Mbps in a 500 adapter is not in reality one performance bottlenecks. In the case of devolo, the brand only includes Gigabit ports in their dLAN 650+ ranges and dLAN 1200+.

Q. Since the powerline adapters are always connected, the power consumption is not significant?

R. No. This is because most of the brands include low-power modes when it is detected that there is no data to circulate the network. In the case of devolo, the brand devices using a patented technology which allows a significant reduction in consumption compared to older devices. For example, one dLAN adapter 550+ has an average consumption of 2.6 watts but only 0.6 watts in stand-by.

We hope that the questions and answers presented have helped to clarify the any doubts. If you have other questions let in review we try to help.
